Video Reaction # 3

The third video I watched is called "Women Should Represent Women In Media." The speaker talks about how when articles or news stories come out, the majority of time it is men who are talking in these articles or stories. For example, when using statistics or stating facts, the experts that come out in stories are 80% men and 20% females. She says that when women come out with news articles they are more likely to challenge stereotypes unlike men. Although this is true, I don't believe this is anyones fault, maybe some of the women writers or news representatives don't write or present as well as a man does. In my opinion, I feel like this is something that can easily be changed.

Video Reaction # 2

The second video I watched on Ted.com is called "Why We Have Too Few Women Leaders." It is about women and how they are successful, but they still dont have the highest position possible in any job; it is always a man who holds that position. The speaker goes on to give statistics of women and their job positions in society today. She points out three different things women should do to try and get higher up in society just like men: 1. sit at the table, 2. make your partner a real partner, and 3. don't leave before you leave. The speaker says women and men both need to contribute an even amount to make sure things stay fair. She says the real reason men are more successful than women is because they believe more in themselves than women do. Women or more prone to putting themselves down or not believing as highly in themselves as men do. In my opinion, I agree with her. Women can be just as successful as men if they really wanted to, you just have to believe in yourself.

Video Reaction # 1

The first video I watched on Ted.com is called "We Are All Cyborgs Now." One of the first things that stood out to me the most is that the speaker said that when we lose information on our computer, we automatically feel a loss in our mind as well. She said that it is a weird emotion that we experience. I think that the fact that we do actually feel like that when that happens is indeed a crazy thought. Another thing that I found interesting is that the speaker said we have 2 different adolescent stages. The one which we call puberty and the second which is about us making our "second person" online. What the speaker explains to us, is that we are too dependent on technology and we seem to be getting lost in it. I, in fact, agree with the speaker. People can barely go a few minutes without refreshing their facebook or twitter on their phones to see what the 411 one is. All in all, even though our society is advancing in technology every day, people need to stop and slow down and notice the little things around them.

Ms. Winter 2012

In Ms. Winter 2012, I found an article that really caught my attention titled “Victory Over Violence” by Stephanie Hallett. This article is about how the FBI changed the definition of rape. Rape was originally defined as “the carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will” (page 12). The Feminist Majority Foundation has argued for the past few years that this definition must be changed. They said that the definition missed some important parts, that it only referred to penile-vaginal penetration, and that it needed to include: anal and oral rape, males who have gotten raped, and rapes by other objects besides body parts.  FMF wanted it to be changed to help police cases get identified better when something like this happened. After a few years, the definition was finally changed. After reading this article, I think it was a very good idea that the definition was changed and included all the things that it was originally missing. As the article stated, it will help national crime statistics better.

Sgt. Kevin Albanese and Trooper David Aresco Reaction

After Sgt. Kevin Albanese and Trooper David Aresco came to class, I knew how awful people could be in society but I never realized how many issues were going on with child pornography. I realized how careful we all have to be when posting things on the internet like Facebook or twitter, or even when we text other people. Anyone who is good with technology could get ahold of your information or pictures and put it to bad use. One should always make sure their profiles are private, but even then you are not always safe. Once your info is out on twitter or facebook, it is not your property anymore, but theirs.
